The premiere took place on Thursday, 23 June 1977 at the New York State Theater, Lincoln Center, with ''mise en scène'' by Rouben Ter-Arutunian and lighting by Ronald Bates. The costumes by Karinska were the last she designed for City Ballet; Robert Irving conducted. ''Vienna Waltzes'' was seen in preview at City Ballet's gala on 15 June, at which time Jean-Pierre Bonnefous danced the role later assumed by Jorge Donn.
